Black, White, Just Right! by Marguerite W. Davol

The way the young girl speaks is the way most young children speak, which is essential to young readers. The young girl is a mixed-race while her parents are black and white, I really enjoyed this because it is not something you see in books often and there was nothing negative mentioned about any race. The characters presented in the story are interesting, the young girl who is telling the story is someone all students can see themselves in, and the parents are fun and kind.

The characters and the story are what really put this book over the top, any young child could understand the story, and it is easy enough for early readers to be able to read it. I believe this book is essential for all children to read not just children who are from a mixed race background because it does teach such a valuable lesson. I absolutely loved this book the message is so important, accept yourself no matter what. Overall, I still think the story would be good for a biracial child dealing with their identity. Although she views her grandchildren as just right, she still holds certain biases and is unable to be completely objective. This story was written by a white grandmother for her biracial grandchildren. In another photo a black male is delivering pizza. Also on the bus is a white male wearing a suit and tie, a black male wearing a jacket and headphones, and an Asian lady with short hair and slanted eyes. For example in one illustration, the family is on a bus smiling and happy. However, on some of the pages, I can find biases and stereotypes in some of the illustrations. The illustrations add to the story and portray exactly what the text is referencing.

They would keep the child engaged and assist them in following along with the story.

The illustrations are realistic and represent the text. The white father listens and likes to dance to rap music while the black mother likes ballet. The characters are realistic, diverse, and opposes some racial stereotypes.

This story is appropriate for elementary students and uses rhyming language that they could easily understand. She goes on to explain how she is like both of them and how she’s “just right.” They story is interesting and would be good for a biracial child to identify with, however it could also be good to explain to children of all races that they are a mixture of both of their parents. Throughout the story the daughter explains the differences between her mothers and fathers physical features as well as their interests. This is a fiction story is about a biracial child who has a black mother and white father and how she is a perfect mixture of both.
